Consultation and Dialogue – Foreign, Economic and Social Political Challenges in Germany and China

From March 9th to March 11th 2015, Achim Post, Member of German Parliament and Secretary General of the Party of European Socialists (PES), Felix Porkert, Head of Department for International Affairs of SPD, Franz X. Danner, Department of International Affairs of SPD and Knut Dethlefsen, Desk Officer for China and Korea at Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Berlin, were in Beijing and Nanjing to exchange views on foreign, economic and social political challenges in Germany and China.

On March 9th, the delegation met with Zhang Zhijun, Minister of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, to discuss current development concerning Chinese and German foreign policy. On the same day they also exchanged views on the state and perspectives of the cooperation between the German social democracy and the Communist Party of China (CPC) as well as current political developments in Germany and China at the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

On March 10th, Achim Post, Felix Porkert, Franz X. Danner and Knut Dethlefsen discussed current developments concerning Chinese foreign policy at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR) with Prof. Feng Zhongping, Vice President of CICIR, and other colleagues of CICIR. Apart from the Chinese foreign policy they also debated how to solve current global challenges (e.g. crisis in Ukraine, threat by IS) through German/European-Chinese cooperation.

During their talks in Beijing the Chinese and the German side realized that the exchange concerning foreign, economic and social policy between the two countries is already intensive. Besides, the visit enabled the German and Chinese side to intensify this mutual understanding even more.

On March 10th during the programme in Nanjing the delegation first met with Long Xiang, Deputy Party Secretary of Nanjing, about the economic and cultural cooperation between Nanjing and Germany.

At a joint lunch on March 11th the delegation held a conversation with Prof. Fan Heping and other professors from the Southeast University and Nanjing University on the topic of socio-political transformation in China and Germany.

In the afternoon the delegation visited Nanjing University and exchanged opinions with legal scholars and students of the School of Law about the rule of law development in the fields of labour law and social security law.
