Meeting of the Chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) with high-ranking party officials of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in Beijing on July 14th and July 15th

Within the context of the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the beginning of official party relations between the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and the Communist Party of China (CPC) the Chairman of SPD, Sigmar Gabriel, met high-ranking party officials of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in Beijing on July 14th and July 15th.

In the afternoon of July 15th, Sigmar Gabriel and Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel met General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, President of the People’s Republic of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, Xi Jinping, in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. During their meeting they talked about German-Chinese relations, the relations between SPD and CPC and the strategies of the future development of Germany and China. At noon of July 15th, Sigmar Gabriel and Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel met Wang Jiarui, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, to talk about the general relations between the SPD and the CPC and current challenges for both parties and both countries as well as global issues.

During a meeting with Zhang Zhijun, Minister of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, in the afternoon of July 14th Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel and representatives of the International Department of SPD exchanged views on the current development of Chinese and German foreign policy.

In the evening of July 14th, Vice Chairman of SPD, Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel, met Chen Fengxiang, Vice Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, to discuss the relations between the SPD and the CPC and current developments in Germany and China.

Finally, during a public speech on July 15th titled “Perspectives on German-Chinese Relations” in the context of the newly initiated lecture series on global justice and development hosted by the International Department of CPC Central Committee and organized by the Chinese Association for International Understanding (CAFIU) and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Sigmar Gabriel underlined the importance of the Chinese-German relations concerning economics, politics and society. He also pointed out challenges regarding the relations between the two parties and the two countries.

During all the meetings both sides emphasized the importance and quality of the relations between SPD and CPC. Since the beginning of the official relations in 1984, the trust and friendship between the two parties has been increased steadily. This solid base will not only enable the two parties as well as the two countries to find suitable solutions to the problems within and between them, but also to the most urgent current and future global problems.
