On June 1st and June 2nd, experts from Germany and China discussed the consequences of economic crises and digitalization on the construction and participatory forms of political parties and the implementation of policies.

The societies of Germany and China are situated in a significant process of change due to economic crises and the ongoing digitalization of the workplace and private life. Experts from Germany and China discussed the effects of these developments on the construction and participation forms of political parties and the implementation of policies in Beijing on June 1st and June 2nd 2015.

On June 1st and June 2nd Prof. Dr. Thomas Meyer, Deputy Chairman of the Core Value Commission of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Dr. Christian Krell, Head of the Academy for Social Democracy at Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and member of the Core Value Commission of SPD, and Dr. Henning Meyer, Director of the political consulting company New Global Strategy and member of the Core Value Commission of SPD, visited Beijing.

On June 1st, they participated in a discussion meeting at Tsinghua University on the topic “Marxism and Modern Society from a European and Chinese Perspective” with Prof. Wang Hui, Faculty of Chinese language and Literature, Prof. Dr. Wang Shaoguang, Department of Governance and Public Administration at Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. Dr. Zhu Andong, Faculty of Marxism at Tsinghua University and Dr. Zhou Zhan’an, Faculty of Literature Studies at Shanghai University.

On June 2nd, the three experts from Germany exchanged views on the “Construction of the Party and the Development of Society” at the Central Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. Prof. Dr. Wang Changjiang, Director of the Division of Party Construction, Prof. Dr. Zhang Zhiming and Prof. Dr. Zhu Lingjun, Deputy Directors of the Division of Party Construction and Prof. Dr. Cao Pengfei, Professor at the Division of Party Construction, took part in the discussion.

In the evening of June 2nd, the experts participated in a discussion meeting at the Party Literature Research Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. They had a discussion on “Reform policies in China and German – achievements and challenges of good governance in China and Germany” with Chen Jin, Deputy Director, Chen Li, Director of the Sixth Research unit and Wang Xiangping, Subdivision director at the Sixth research unit.

During the discussion meetings the experts from Germany and China concluded that the two countries face similar challenges. In both countries the political parties have to think of new ways to include the population as well as party members into the process of policy formulation and implementation within the context of economic crises and digitalization. New media, but also renewed on the spot participation, e.g. in the form of local participation, are possible ways to enable the inclusion of the population in both countries in the decision making process.
