China Visit of Carsten Stender

Event: Regional and International Affairs

During a two day visit in Beijing, Carsten Stender, Head of the SPD Chairman’s Office, met with Chinese scholars to exchange views on the ongoing Chinese constitutional reform process and intra-party democracy against the backdrop of the big socio-economic changes in both countries.

On September 22nd, Carsten Stender met with Prof. Dr. Xie Libin, Director of the Sino-German Institute of Law, Prof. Dr. Liu Fei, dean of the China-EU School of Law, and Prof. Dr. Yang Jun, Institute of globalization and global issues, to discuss the ongoing Chinese constitutional reform process and how China and its legal system could benefit from past German experiences.

During a discussion at the Central Party School of the Communist Party of China on intra-party democracy and structural modernization later the same day, Carsten Stender met with Prof. Dr. Jiang Yue, head of the School for comparative party studies, Prof. Zhao Xusheng, Prof. Xie Feng and Dr. Zeng Yi. One of the main topics of the exchange was how political parties can ensure responsive and responsible governance both within the party and as a governing party.
