Event: Society and Politics
March 2nd was a special day for the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. It was the day of its 90th anniversary. At the anniversary celebration in Berlin, Joachim Gauck, the president of the federal republic of Germany and Alexander Kwasniewski, former president of the Republic of Poland, gave speeches and scholarship holders of the young generation discussed with senior representatives of trade unions and the Social Democratic Party.
A look in the audience revealed that many top-class politicians were attending the ceremony. The event could also be watched online via videostream. So did the FES office in Shanghai. On March 4th, it welcomed friends of the foundation for a small happening with German-style snacks and a screening of the highlights of the celebration, the allocution by Kurt Beck, chairperson of the FES, the speech delivered by Joachim Gauck, and a new movie about the history of the foundation.
The program reviewed the political life of Friedrich Ebert as well as the work of the foundation that carries on both his name and his commitment for social justice and a more democratic society. Before and after the speeches, the participants shared their ideas while enjoying food and a warm atmosphere.
